Pets Welcome sign outside Commonwealth at York apartments.

Choosing the right dog is an important process, and it includes considering what breed matches your own personality, lifestyle and living space. There are many dogs who are perfectly happy living in an apartment, and even large dogs who like to lounge can be comfortable and cozy at home in a smaller space.

There are certain breed characteristics that make some dogs better suited for living in an apartment than others. While your pup will have access to our brand new, spacious and green Bark Park for dogs of all sizes, they won’t be able to play all day in a large backyard. Living in an apartment also means having neighbors who live close enough to hear barking and crying, and you’ll want to choose a dog who will be happy in your home.

Here are just a few dog breeds that do exceptionally well in apartments to help you choose just the right dog for you!

Bichon Frise

Playful, curious and fun, Bichon Frise are small, but sturdy dogs who come with a hypoallergenic coat. Bichon’s do well with most other dogs and kids, and they love to play and socialize. They are an adaptable, confident and curious breed that will win over the hearts of your neighbors and fellow dog owners in no time!

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are attentive, alert and athletic, and make for happy apartment dwelling dogs. They love to cuddle on the couch as much as they love to head out for a brisk romp around the block, and are adaptable to their owners’ lifestyles, making them perfect pups to bring home to your apartment.

French Bulldog

French bulldogs are as cute as they are adaptably, playful and fun, and their alert and attentive nature makes them happy at home in an apartment. They don’t require much exercise, but do enjoy love and companionship, and will make excellent dogs for singles, couples and families with kids!

Greyhound

The greyhound is a sweet, gentle companion dog who loves to run, play and cuddle at home. They are small in size, and make for lovable, loyal pets that will do well living happily in an apartment!

Maltese

Maltese make for charming, friendly and alert pets who love to lounge in your lap or frolic outdoors. They don’t require excessive exercise, but are athletic and agile, and love playing with toys. They have low shedding coats, meaning that they won’t shed all over your home, making them excellent dogs for your apartment.

Pug

Pugs love to share space with just about anyone, and they love most to be loved. They enjoy good food, toys and playtime outdoors, and they are adaptable and social with just about anyone. They don’t need a lot of space to run, and make for happy, adorable apartment dwellers.
